A Mid-Week Break

It never hurts to retreat, right?

(Guaita Fortress in the Republic of San Marino)

"San Marino is one of the only three countries in the world to be completely surrounded by a single other country

(the others being Vatican City, also surrounded by Italy, and Lesotho). It is the third smallest country in Europe,

with only Vatican City and Monaco being smaller. It is also the fifth smallest country in the world."  (Wiki)

Splendid view of this fortress with interesting background information!!
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Steven. It was all new information to me!
Magnifique photo avec ce château.
Ginnie Hart: Merci, Martine.
I LOVE your misty shot! Beautifully done!

Great info on San Marino!

The Hopi Nation is completely surrounded by the Navajo Nation. But... you know... our indigenous peoples don't matter, so no one knows that :-(
Ginnie Hart: The things we learn on SC, Elizabeth! (sigh)

Fascinating Ginnie, I know absolutely nothing about this place. Do they have a police force or army I wonder?
Ginnie Hart: It's so strange to find out about something like this at our age, Chris, isn't it! Good question about a police force or army. I'm sure someone will find out for us!
Well that's a great question for a quiz night!

Nice pic Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: It is, indeed, Bill. Thanks.

One thing which I think makes the history of Italy interesting Ginnie, is that it once comprised many city states, often at war with one another.
Ginnie Hart: You obviously know much more about this than I do, Chad!!!

I love this view. And that was quite unexpected trip. Love the misty castle in between the trees.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Astrid. It really was one of biggest surprises of the trip...besides driving through the Swiss and Austrian Alps!!!
Impressionnante forteresse , est elle toujours occupée?
Ginnie Hart: You have to pay to enter, Claudine, and we didn't have the time, so I don't know how busy she still is. But good questions I assume she is.
Heel mooi doorkijkje naar het kasteel van San Marino.
Ginnie Hart: It was delightful to see, Marjolein. Bedankt.
J'aime bien ta composition avec ces arbres en premier plan.
Bonne journée Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Merci, Pascale.

Ooohhhh... I remember now - I've been there. It during my first holiday by air back in early 1970s. If I ever had any photos of it then, they have long gone. Good views across the surrounding countryside from the tower, I should think.
Ginnie Hart: Good views even from the city walls near the castle, Alan. So glad you had a chance to be there, even if you don't have the photos to remind you.
So foggy, are you sure that's not England? Could be any English castle somewhere in the north? wink

Oh, I have been to Vatican City and Monaco. San Marino - not yet!
Ginnie Hart: So, put it on you Bucket List, LC, because it's totally worth it...and not at all like England...unless you have a mount 2,457 ft. above sea level? smile
I can't remember seeing this when we were there years ago, Ginnie. It seemed very touristy to me then. This is a superb picture of the Fortress.
Ginnie Hart: I think we must have been there at a good time of the year, and between 4-5 on a Sunday afternoon. It was not too busy. We loved it! Thank you.
I like the mystical mood of this view. I imagine a magic castle.
Ginnie Hart: Me, too, Ruthie. smile Thanks.

I like this picture and can imagine sitting up there in front of a crackling log fire, sipping on a sherry, while surveying the plebs at work down there smile
Ginnie Hart: HA! I like your imagination, Louis! smile

Ginnie Hart: Yes, it's a country!!! And a very small one at that!!! smile Thanks, Elaine.
