photoblog image A Mid-Week Break

A Mid-Week Break

May they rest in peace.

(the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague, Czech Republic, 2005)

ADDENDUM:  There are 12,000+ headstones in the cemetery but with 100,000 bodies buried

below them stacked up to 12 deep because of lack of space.

Continuing on with photos from years ago, seeing what I can do with them,

this time with a Sony DSC-P150.

A good shot Ginnie, all the more from the crowded view.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Frank. This cemetery's history is enough to break anyone's heart. There are 12,000+ headstones in the cemetery but with 100,000 bodies buried below them stacked up to 12 deep because of lack of space.

A crowded dance-floor...
Ginnie Hart: And a very sad story, Ray. As I told Frank, there are 12,000+ headstones in the cemetery but with 100,000 bodies buried below them stacked up to 12 deep because of lack of space.
Ce cimetière a l'air bien encombré.
Ginnie Hart: This photo only begins to show how crowded it is, Martine. There are 12,000+ headstones in the cemetery but with 100,000 bodies buried below them stacked up to 12 deep because of lack of space.

Great B&W, Ginnie and that is some real crowded cemetery. (the tittle is pretty literally here)
Ginnie Hart: Bedankt, Astrid. As I'm telling everyone, there are 12,000+ headstones in the cemetery but with 100,000 bodies buried below them stacked up to 12 deep because of lack of space.

I have never seen so many gravestones packed in together. I have just read your comment to Frank
Ginnie Hart: It really is mind-blowing, Lisl. I think I'll add the comment to my text above.

Very sobering Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Indeed so, Chris.
Cemeteries are hardly places I love but I really like the treatment on this one and the moving side of these modest and simple steles of a Jewish cemetery
Ginnie Hart: I actually enjoy visiting cemeteries, Marie, because of what they teach you about the culture and people in different countries (likje Malta, Budapest...and here in Prague). Merci.
Que de monde par ici !
Belle prise de vue Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Way too many, Claudine. Merci.

Crikey! So many lives represented there. I like your view very much, it makes cemetery so densely packed.
Ginnie Hart: I don't think I'll ever forget it, Alan.

a great image, I have been there with my students some times - and we were so impressed by this old Jewish Cemetery - I own also a book about this special place - you surely visited also the grave of Rabbi Löw.
Ginnie Hart: Yes, Philine. I'm sure I visited several of the key tombs but wish I could remember more. Maybe we'll go back one day!
Fascinating but sad Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Indeed so, Bill!

They certainly pack them in here Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: The thought of it is quite gripping, Chad.
wow, that is a LOT of dead folks!! crazy good photo tho... sad story, and i'm sure there is a developer somewhere who wants to build a subdivision of houses onto of it all...
Ginnie Hart: Well, thank God THAT will never happen, Elaine! (sigh)

Ginnie Hart: It's something you never forget once you see it, Pascale. Merci.
it really looks like a tumble of stones, Ginnie. looks good in b/w.
Ginnie Hart: "Tumble" is an appropriate word, Ayush. Thanks.
I can imagine one stands there awestruck at what is in front of you.
Ginnie Hart: Absolutely, Brian!

It must have been an eerily feeling walking through that cemetery. Did you find it emotional?
Ginnie Hart: Very emotional, Emily, yes. It broke my heart.
What a poignant image.
Ginnie Hart: I hope to never see anything like it again, Ruthie.

Mid-week break? This looks like a long-term break. Very long-term smile Great shot and I must remember the place, if ever I get to Prague.
Ginnie Hart: If ever you do get to Prague, Louis, it's a must! You'll never forget it.
Truly heartbreaking.
As an image - very poignant.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Elizabeth!
I so love the processing!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Larry.

This cemetery is quite remarkable. When I visited, access was through the PINKAS SYNAGOGUE with its memorial to Jewish victims of the holocaust.
Ginnie Hart: I don't have a full memory of that day,Cherry, but I assume access was the same for us. It all was quite sobering.

Wow...now that's the perfect capture for your words. Amazing 12k plus for 100k bodies! That's incredible!!
Ginnie Hart: I know, Robin. It's all very sobering.
