Hannover's First Advertisement
Besides the Marktkirche
(Market Church) in City Center, here's the Kreuzkirche (Holy Cross Church)
nearby that was completed in 1333. It's not as famous but is Hannover's oldest church and is known for its Passion Altar by Lucas Cranach and the collection of icons in St. Anne's Chapel (neither of which I have seen) .
Okay, before you say anything, this is as straight as I'll get the tower of the church (I used the ruler on the center of the lower front window)! I clearly was standing a bit off center when I took the pic in March of 2005. Also, you know I have a thing for clocks and towers/spires, so in this instance, it wasn't the overall church I tried to capture but the detail of the tower...because:
See that raised tile to the right of the lower window? It's a dove ("duve" in Low German), donated by Johann Duve in 1652 when he had the baroque spire erected on top of the tower. It's thought to be Hannover's first advertisement sign.
