Pennsylvania Dutch Art: A Tribute

Helena Jacoba Therese Wijdekop van Leeuwen
1 Aug 1924 - 6 Jan 2004

In honor of Astrid's mom, who passed away 7 years ago this month.

Every piece in this collage was painted by her and sits in our home as a tribute to her.

Today is my turn again at Vision and Verb,

talking about the "Pennsylvania Dutch" term.

Thank you so much for putting in so much time, to create this wonderful overview of some of her work and to make this tribute.
My mom was a hard worker and always found time to knit, do needle point (or whatever) and in the last 25 years of her life, she painted.
She used to go to all kind of places to find or buy wooden objects to paint.
The top left small cabinet, she saved from the dumper-truck, while walking the dog, she found it in the street.
Most boxes and this cabinet is also painted in the inside.
For my brother and me it was impossible to keep all of her work she made, we would have to live in a 10 room house...

Beautiful tribute Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Kala. I wish I could have met her.
Some persons just can't help it. They have to make beautiful things.

When you sit down and think of it, there is so much to respect.
Ginnie Hart: I know, Pekka. One of these would have been more than enough but she apparently couldn't stop once she got started! That's a lot of talent to respect! Thanks.

I am Dutch, but don't know this style
Ginnie Hart: It's 'Dutch' in the Deutsch/German sense, Chantal...which became renedered 'Dutch' by the Pennsylvanians (as I explain at V&V).
These are very lovely objects and this is a great tribute Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: I agree, Bill, and thank you. This helps me understand Astrid and her heritage a bit more!

Ginnie Hart: It's an honor to live around such creativity, Philine. I also grew up with it in my own home with a creative, artistic mom and dad both. Hartstikke dedankt.

I liked reading your V&V tribute today, oh, you are right and no "Dummkopf" (German, Ginnie!), language is often a crazy thing- and there are many 'false friends' we are using. 'Dutch' sounds like 'Duits', and the two languages are sisters indeed, and English is our Germanic brother! I know this kind of lovely painting from Austria and some East-European folks, and I myself own also some fine, small hand- painted objects - local art, and it could be that Astrid's grandma taught this fine art of painting to her mother. I love that there are so many connections we didn't know before!
Ginnie Hart: I loved calling Dummkopf French, Philine! grin I laughed more at that than anything else. HAHAHA! You know how much language intrigues me, of course. This post was fun for me. Hartstikke bedankt for your support and encouragement. Astrid says her grandma did NOT teach her mom anything artistic. In fact, quite the opposite. She thought all of it was a total waste of time. So sad.
Astounding work Ginnie..She was gifted, bless her.. and you have done her work justice with this collection.
Ginnie Hart: She really was gifted, Ron. I wish I could have met her. Thank you.

Beautiful tribute!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, Oscar.
Absolutely gorgeous pieces of art. Astrid's mum was a great artist and I couldn't help noticing the similarity with canal boat art which I love.
Ginnie Hart: You're so right, Janet. I bet if Astrid's mom had been asked, she would have gladly done a boat, too. smile Thanks for that smile.

Beautiful work. Lovely of you to honor her life's work.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Jess. This was my great pleasure. I wish I had met her.
They're very, very similar to canal boat folk art that we have in England.

Maybe it was originally from Holland.

I'm so sorry to hear about that, Ginnie.
But memories never fade away...
Ginnie Hart: Someone else mentioned canal-boat folk art and I wonder if she ever wanted to paint that, too?! I bet she would have if asked. Thank you, LC.
