Manneken Pis

"Little man urinating"

Perhaps this is Brussels' most famous icon?
(as seen last July, 2008)

On my last post, Chad saw the windmills at Mini-Europe "waving their arms around while urinating in the canal."  Philine laughed at Chad and said, "he is a special fan of the most famous Manneken P** in Brussels!"
So, this is for Chad and Philine!  :)

Ginnie Hart: He sure does get around, Rian. It's hard to resist him! Thanks.

Bit young for beer, isn't he? smile
Ginnie Hart: Yes, Larry, I'd say so! smile
oh boy...wasn't expecting this one.
Ginnie Hart: HA! I love it, Heather. smile

This young fella has been waiting 1 year for this moment...finally able to stand unassisted, he proclaims his alpha-male status over his 1 foot square "kingdom" by performing the human equivalent of beating his chest.
Ginnie Hart: Marking his territory since 1619, Ray! That's a lot of P**!

smile We immediately thought about Manneke Pis when we read the comment of Chad, you did a great job capturing this young fella 'with high need' hoge nood, (in Dutch).
Love the tones.
In the link is the 'real' story about him and it shows how 'small' this one is.
Thanks for the smile and the great memory behind this picture.

Ginnie Hart: You picked the same link as I have in my text, so "zelfde pagina opnieuw." smile As I told Ray, he's been marking his territory since 1619! Bedankt, MLMAMV.
on y revient toujours à ce petit zozio!
Ginnie Hart: You are so right, O-P. We can't resist him! smile Merci.

And I laugh today again- together with Astrid (thanks for the story!) and Ray and...-and I can imagine a big laughter and we don't need any language to understand this so human gesture (alleen maar een man kan dit doen op deze imponerende wijze!)! This little man is so wonderful and seems to enjoy his watery creation and we like to catch some drops!
Ginnie Hart: I imagine that all women throughout time have been at least somewhat jealous, Philine. grin Thanks, as always.

he definitely has no worries wink
Ginnie Hart: He's been marking his territory since 1619, Babz, and no one seems willing to "cross" it! smile Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I think he's been photographed before, Ginnie! While the figure is very artistic, when drunken jobs do it in the streets after they get thrown out of the pubs is disgusting.
Ginnie Hart: Like all the major icons of the world, Alan, who can resist him! smile We all want our own take on him, I guess. But you are so right about the drunken variations. Totally disgusting. This one is nothing but a cutie!

Nothing wrong with his prostate tongue
Ginnie Hart: HA! I should have expected that from you, Vintage or Aussie. smile
Well done Ginnie tongue
Ginnie Hart: It's easy to catch him in the act, Bill, except for all the people milling around him!

I for one am grateful that he isn't waving his arms around like the windmills, we would get drenched ;o)
Ginnie Hart: HA! The vision of that is delightful, Mike. smile Thanks.

I m sure this image has been many a times before, I m still wondering how many would have got this side bottom-up perspective.

His pose with one hand on the hip is amusing !
Ginnie Hart: If you wait around long enough and can edge your way around all the people, Thomas, you can get your picture. But what always surprises me the most is how small this corner is out on the street. All of a sudden it's there, without any big fanfare!
You know Ginnie we completely missed this fellow when we visited!
Ginnie Hart: Actually, Bernie, he's very easy to miss. If you didn't see all the people milling around, you'd miss him altogether! Maybe next time you will find him. Abbie would love it. smile
I like the rhyming images too!
Indeed the most famous image of Brussels, I think.
Ginnie Hart: Everyone has to photograph it at least once, Wim, right?!! grin

Astrid is right: Manneke P** in Dutch (in Brabant dialect Manneken P**)-"on occasion, the statue is hooked up to a keg of beer. Cups will be filled up with the beer flowing from the statue and given out to people passing by."- oh, all the visitors on Bill's blog today who are so longing for a good beer should notice that date for a visit in Brussels! Did you see also Janneken P**? (no joy for the eyes!)
Ginnie Hart: I did NOT know about Jannekin P**, Philine, but now that I do, we will definitely have to find her on our next trip!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanneke_Pis

Nor did I know about the beer day...kinda like the streets being paved with gold. HA!
I almost had to fight to get near this for a photo when I was there in 2003 Ginnie, it's such great fun though isn't it.
Ginnie Hart: It definitely can get crowded, Brian. I had to wait till a space cleared for me. But it was worth it. Thanks.

I wish Matthew would do this instead of using his diaper.
Ginnie Hart: HAHAHA! As long as you're talking about a toilet, Alex! It'll happen. Both my kids (a boy and a girl) were 3 before the diapers were able to stay off. Others are earlier, I know. I didn't think it would ever happen! But it did and it will!!
Yes, what Zed said.

smile
Ginnie Hart: HA! The important thing for men to know! Thanks, John.

Ginnie Hart: Someone else had beer and you had wine. I hope I can be there on such a day one time, David! Thanks for the smile. smile

In the south of the netherlands the dutch refer to the belgians as not too clever. The belgians again refer to the dutch as penny pinchers.

The way the two groups then communicate their feelings of each other is by way of jokes. E.g the dutch would say that the belgian policemen always walks with a dog becuase two can think better than one. The belgians would return the compliment to say that copper wire was invented when two dutch fought over one cent.

The belgian topper is: Do you know what the mannekin symbolises? A belgian with a dutchy in his hand.

Daar staan je voor als piet lul smile
Ginnie Hart: The Dutch, the Germans, the Belgians....hmmmm. I learn a bit more almost every day, Louis. smile I love it.
