photoblog image Always Look Up

Always Look Up

When this image came across my screen-saver the other day, I was reminded of the awe I had when I first saw it in Sydney, Australia, last May.

This is the hammer-beam roof of St. Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney, Australia.
(a Gothic open-timber roof)

"Designed by Edmund Blacket it was ready for services and consecrated in 1868, making it the oldest cathedral in Australia.....a perfect example of the colonial desire to reproduce England in Australia in the mid nineteenth century".

Donica and I fly to Zürich, Switzerland, tomorrow for a week of business (her) and photos (me).

Funny you should find this on your screen saver and then put it here...last week I saw it on your screen saver and was waiting for it to come back on so I could ask you where it was. I guess my memory isn't what it used to be....since i was there with you.

What a great shot and amazingly crisp colors and textures!

Thanks for bringing this memory back to me smile
Ginnie Hart: Thanks for your vote of confidence, Donica. That means a lot to me.

Amazing piece of architecture and construction. Love the teal blue colors and your composition. Perfect title!
Ginnie Hart: Churches and cathedrals like this just amaze me, Marcie. I think it was the color that caught my eye here more than anything else.
Simply gorgeous Ginnie: Australian Gothic!
Ginnie Hart: The British influence was everywhere, Chris. It was quite amazing, actually.

Beautiful saturation of colors...wonderful capture.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, dear Sherri. This isn't the kind of church I grew up in, which is probably why it means that much more to me when I can show these.
Superb shot of a truly beautiful monument to the ability of people to express their artistry.
Ginnie Hart: Exactly, Michael. Just thinking of the time and energy it must have taken blows my mind!
Symmetry is perfect // You stand in the right place, Ginnie / / Tone excellent color // Beautiful foto // I love it // Regards from Yogyakarta Indonesia //
Ginnie Hart: It was fun to see the symmetry take shape, Bram. Thanks for your kindness.

1/3,3333 s...couldn't help it, I have something with numbers.
Prachtige foto, this is so 'you', beautiful colours, so sharp, the symmetry is stunning, in which your signature is spot on.
'Always look up' and all others directions when you are in Zurich, have a safe flight, you will love it.
Ginnie Hart: I love that numbers mean so much to you, lieve vriend. It tickles me to death. smile I know you didn't grow up in a church like this either, so it would have had the same impact on you. Like Utrecht's Dom, we each would have seen different things through our camera's eye!

Looking up at you pic I can realize your "awe" and your astonishment- and then the eyes are discovering all the details- the coloured glass windows, the lamps etc.- there is a warm religious atmosphere and you can feel like at home- English/European Gothic in Australia! A good time in the beautiful Switzerland!
Ginnie Hart: "Astonishment" is a good word, Philine. Almost all the European churches I've been in have astonished me because they are so different from what I grew up in. Now I look forward to what I'll see in Zurich!
Old designed buildings seem to create more awe than most modern buildings ... Surely there are lessons to be learnt .... Mmmm I wonder why they aren't ... ;-) richard
Ginnie Hart: I am such a glutton for the old architecture, Richard, which somehow seems to stand the test of time!

well framed....i can tell from each sides
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, dear NaCha.
The old Victorians knew what they were doing Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: You got that right, Bill!
They did a good job in the 19th century, which was the time for looking back towards former buildingstyles.
I like the colors and the glass lamps.
Ginnie Hart: You are so right about the 19th century, Wim. I wonder what "they" will say about the 21st century??
When I see this picture, I am reminded of the move called Oscar and Lucinda. It is also set in Australia. Do see it if you have not already
Ginnie Hart: I've heard of that movie, Navin. I'll have to look into it! Thanks for the tip.
What grand colours Ginnie, it surely pays to look up.
Ginnie Hart: Yes, it does, Les. Thanks.

Yes, always look up. and down ;o) Unusual colour combination for a church but it works well.
Ginnie Hart: Photography has taught me to look up, Mike, so thank Gof for the camera! smile
They are peculiar colors in a cathedral! The attention has called me much the treatment that has seemed me hdr. Good symmetry in the taking!
Ginnie Hart: I think this was the first time I ever saw colors like this in a ceiling, José Angel. It really was spectacular.
Fabulous architecture and colours! Great capture.
Have a good and safe trip to Zürich.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, kind sir. I'm really excited about being in Switzerland for the first time in my life.

Ginnie Hart: You have a way of making my day, Albert! Thank you kindly.
What a magnificent ceiling you have pictured here Ginnie, it would do justice to any cathedral in England.
Ginnie Hart: With your British spirit there in Australia, it's like you're one and the same, Brian! But I'm quite sure the Aussie's wouldn't say it like that. smile
