The Brooklyn Bridge

In yesterday's pic I showed you an aerial view of this bridge that separates Manhattan from Brooklyn, two of NYC's 5 burroughs.

In this view, I am standing in Manhattan, looking across the East River to Brooklyn.  We never crossed this bridge while on our three days of double-decker tour buses because they're too heavy for the bridge, which also has a pedestrian lane. 

This is the bridge that had pedestrians, cyclists and cars going back-n-forth at the early-morning time the Twin Towers were hit on 9/11, 2001.  Of all the pics I took of this bridge, I chose this one from our last rainy, foggy day, to give more of a somber tone to it.  We in America will never see this bridge in the same way again!

Great photo, Ginnie. And you are right. I remember seeing the videos on tv, of all the people walking on this bridge on 9/11. What a sight it was, and it will never be forgotten. This is a wonderful picture of the bridge. It has feeling.
Ginnie: Thanks, Kay. We had wanted to walk across the bridge, just to feel the ethos of it, but we couldn't cram it in. Maybe some day....

I know my travels back-n-forth everywhere have got to be confusing to everyone, which is why I now put where I am each day. I live in Atlanta, where I am today, so the trip to NYC has come and gone. However, on the 14th I'll be flying back to Amsterdam, where I am half the year. Don't worry, though, because I never expect anyone to keep up with me and my schedule. It's hard enough for me to do that myslef! smile
have you ever walked into a restaurant with historic framed shots on the wall? This shot reminds me of those frames exactly, very nice treatment.

Gorgeous, moody shot. We're planning a trip to New York this fall, so your last two photos are helping me get psyched for the trip (a bit early maybe, but still ...).
Ginnie: Actually, Mark, there are pics of Venice now on some blogs, where we will be in October, so I know exactly what you mean. For me, my appetite is getting well whetted. smile

A great choice that Ginnie, going for the sepia effect. You had me fooled for sure. When I opened the page I thought I was stuck in a time warp.

This looks positively 19th century! Surely looks must be deceiving and Brooklyn actually did made some progress in the last 200 years smile I like the shot. Whenever I try a sepia conversion I never get the midrange tones right. Do you mind sharing what you did to get this effect?
Ginnie: I probably don't do enough, Martin, in my PSg but I do all the highlights, shadows, and contrasting first before I Desaturate the image 100%. Then I do a Color Change with (depending on the pic) approx. 20 Red and 20 Yellow to get the sepia effect. There's probably another, easier way, but that's how I do it. Hope it helps?

Lovely tones to this image. It's an iconic bridge and I've glad you've chosen to show it from this angle rather than the typical "from the bridge itself".

Excellent detail again. It is like a cutting from an old magazine. Good for framing for the wall.

Is this the bridge that was built on pontoons that were sunk for the purpose, the husband died and his wife completed the project on time and in budget? Maybe you know.

You are absolutely right about this bridge being finished by a woman after her husband died. We heard that story every time we were on a tour bus, so there seems to be a lot of pride about it in NYC. smile
this is a beautiful shot ginnie. the treatment very much sets the mood. ever since i saw gangs of new york i have longed to visit this beautiful city. it is so rich with history. as for 9/11 for most it is a day of mourning, but for me it was my first wedding anniversary and a very happy day for me. one i will surely never forget!
Ginnie: Maybe some day you can visit it, Genevieve. On one of our tours we actually went by the area where that movie was filmed.

I was wondering if you toned this to sepia or that was the day. Your comment suggests the latter. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is one othe great New York experiences.

It's interesting. The tone and the bridge caught my eye and I thought it's a window in the past. Then I noticed the more modern buildings. Beautiful!

I'm interested by the trick of perspective too, where the right hand section of the bridge seems almost to be twisting. I know it's only because of the angle, but it fascinates me.

I'm not going to say a lot about 9/11 except that I watched the events unfold live on the television. I think it was the last time I watched daytime TV.
Ginnie: I went and looked back at yesterday's pic, Ellie, and didn't realize that where I was standing for this pic was on the platform of the building that juts into the water to the left of the bridge...looking towards the Brooklyn side. I wanted to see if the bridge is suddenly turning but I think not. Anyway, I see what you mean. Those tricks can get us every time. smile

I was at work when that day happened and we all crammed into a large assembly room to watch things unfold on TV. I still remember it as though it were yesterday. So surreal!
I appreciate really the choice of Sepia tone here, it gives an old poscard aspect to the shot !
