New York City (aka NYC)

Until I return to Amsterdam on the 14th, I plan to do a series of pics from our vacation trip to NYC last week. 

As we flew into the city on Saturday, April 21st, I was lucky to be sitting on the left side of the airplane to capture this view.  The Hudson River is at the top and the East River is at the bottom, with Manhattan in between.

Some of you will be able to pick out some key buildings but it's the two bridges I'm emphazing here.  The one on the left is the Brooklyn Bridge (which I'll show again tomorrow).  The one on the right is the Manhattan Bridge, which we crossed several times, to and from Brooklyn (foreground). 

There is SO MUCH to say about NYC but I'll leave it for the posts to come and this link.

That's a good way to start a series: with an overview. You either have great image editing skills or you had a very clean window to shoot through. Either way this is well executed!
Ginnie: The window must have been clean, Martin (yes, it was!). And believe it or not, I took this with my trusty little pocket (point and shoot) Sony camera. smile Maybe that would make a good Sony commercial. grin I did do some normal PS tweaking too, of course. smile Thanks.
I'm a little puzzeled her Ginnie as international flights as a rule don't come in from this side. Are you two coming up from Atlanta or DC ? Otherwise thanks for showing this wonderful view of my home, this is a view that we over here don't get to often.
Ginnie: We definitely flew up from Atlanta, Johnny. Sorry for the confusion.

I fell in love with your city and hope I will do it justice in the next few days. You have a lot to be proud of!

Like Martin says, that airplane window must have been remarkably clean. What a great intro. Looking forward to the rest, Ginnie.
Ginnie: I didn't really think about it then but you must be right about the window. It was so clean I never once thought about it! (When it's smudgy, you DO think about it!)

i love NYC. i imagine i could take pictures there for years and never run out of new stuff. this is a great view of brooklyn into lower manhattan.

So cool! I love NYC - I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us since you're starting off with this amazing photo. I agree with those who mentioned before, how amazingly clear the photo is, taken from an airplane window.

Fantastic shot of the Big Apple, a place I'd certainly love to visit again. Was there last for The World March Of Women in Oct. 2000.
Ginnie: So you were there pre-9/11, Mary! I wonder if you'd notice a big difference today, post-9/11? We had a feeling that the city was different, even though we had not been there before.
Oh wow what a great shot Ginnie! you captured it so well especially through a window. I have never been to New York and admit that the thought of ever going scares me abit.I am so used to wide open open spaces!
Ginnie: Yes, DD, that would be a shock to your system, I'm sure, after being in wide open spaces. However, if ever you have a chance, I do hope you can go. It's a memory of a lifetime.

Ginnie: HA! You can be sure that I'm not done with A'dam yet, Petra. Knowing that we'll go back there almost every month tells me I'll keep finding new stuff to see and capture. Just the thought of that excites me!

NYC is something else, and if ever you have a chance to go there, I'd recommend it. For now, I'll give you some appetizers. smile

The colours and available detail in this picture is amazing. Especially since plane windows are normally covered in bodily oils like hair smudges.

You probably pp'ed the oily layer out. I checked in PS and couldn't find the oily layer there, so you must have some secret.

Two bridges coming and going to more or less the same places. Must be heavy traffic. I will for ever remember the ceaseless hooting in that city, when I stayed in a hotel in Manhatten.
Ginnie: HA! The window must have been clean, Louis, because I didn't have to PS anything out, thank goodness!

I had to laugh over your "hooting" comment. Wait till you see my pic queued up for Saturday. smile

That truly is an incredible shot, because of the window and the point and shoot. So much detail. I'm looking forward to your educational tidbits, because I know very little about NYC. Glad to know what those bridges are!
Ginnie: As you know, dear Ruth, Lesley helped me figure out the bridges our first day together. But it's funny, because after a week, I was able to figure out a lot all by myself! smile

I really feel lucky that I was able to spend a week in this city and find out so many things. As I queue pics, I'm finding out even more. What a city! So glad I was able to share some of it with you!

This is a great shot Gramma Ginn. Can you imagine how this would have been with a polarisor on?!! I have one on order to pick up later this week, so cannot wait to fly to UK to try it out on the plane!!

Ginnie: You'll have to tell me what the polarisor would do, Neil, because I haven't a clue (especially on a not-too-bright day). My little Sony pocket camera (which took this pic), of course, wouldn't take a polarizer but my Canon would.

i think its a fine shot ginnie but i feel you could have done a lot more...go b/w, do some crazy stuff in pshop...i mean its a fantastic aerial view and without exploiting its potential fully it becomes slightly boring...
Ginnie: HA! You give me way too much credit, Sam! I gladly leave all that crazy stuff for you to play around with. In fact, you can even have this (slightly boring is better than totally boring?) pic and show me what you'd do with it. I'd love to see it. Seriously smile

I have to agree with Magnus - did you pay the pilot to slow down and cruis around.... smile Buildings are cool but I'm always facinated by the roads...

Great shot - and it makes me want to go to NYC - see some opera, visit Blue Note...shopping....

And BTW, I think by then the pilot really WAS slowing down, even though I kept feeling like I was losing good pics. It all passed by too quickly, and I didn't even know what I had captured until later when I could identify the bridges in particular. I really was lucky!

Are you sure this is New York? Not only do I see space between some of the cars, but some of the cars are not yellow!
Ginnie: HA! You are so right, Colin. Actually, where you see the cars is in Brooklyn, which supposedly they claim is not anything like Manhattan's mad house! smile

Oh gosh! Wow! Amazing! Cor!

Now I've used up all my best words! I'll have to try to think of some more.

Fantastic clarity and detail, I feel as if I'm looking over your shoulder.

A polarising filter sorts out stray light, same as with polarised sunglasses. It can make blue skies more blue. You have to twist them around until you see the effect you're happiest with.
Ginnie: That's what I thought about the polarizer, Ellie. I wonder how it would have changed this pic if I had used the Canon (and had a polarizer!).

Wow, wow and wow. I was born on Long Island, but have never seen this angle of "The City that Never Sleeps"! You must have sat on Paul Bunyon's shoulders, or maybe in a plane...
Ginnie: Yes, Erik, I was in a plane at just the right window, it appears, to snap this shot as we were flying into the city from Atlanta for our week's vacation. Glad you could see another view of your old stomping grounds. smile

ginnie it is the brown lego blogs south of the bridges which look extremely interesting to me. i didn't think there would be such gaps betwee buildings in nyc. very nice
Ginnie: This is when we say that pictures never lie (except those that are highly PSed, of coures). Those "lego blogs" are actually in Brooklyn, Neal, where everything seemed totally different from Manhattan. So you are so right! Thanks.

I'm amazed at how much city they've been able to pack into the land space.
Ginnie: You are so right, Wailor. One of the things that still surprises me about Atlanta is how spread out it is! Of course, that's part of its problem when it comes to public transportation!
