Enough Books to Sink a Ship

It happens to be Europe's largest second-hand bookshop.

And it's in the Hay Castle in Hay on Wye, Wales.

My first time ever in that country, thanks to Tiff, back in May.

"The Invaders Plan"...what a classic by that master phantasiser!
Ginnie: I was wondering if someone would notice, Ray! smile
I love books! wink Love the light coming through the window or the door! Beautiful capture!
Ginnie: You would be in heaven there, Sue, if you love books! And yes, there were windows all over the place, giving lots of wonderful light to the place. Thanks.
Nice one Ginnie... Did it have a musty smell?
Ginnie: Thanks, Jacquelyn, and NO. That was the surprising thing about the place! It was so well-organized in an unorganized way, if that makes sense! smile

Fantastic image Ginnie! This is quite a find!
Ginnie: Thank you, Elizabeth. It was quite the place!!!

Yes Ginnie it's a lovely place - Hay and the bookshop too. A long journey but what exquisite weather we had!
Ginnie: You were such a trooper that day (as Astrid would say), and we owe a lot to you for being able to step foot in there. THANK YOU again!

Oh wonderful- I could while here for some time getting lost and absorbed in other lives and worlds! Your treatment fits the atmophere of this bookshop. In Netherlands you can find such bookshops, too - a whole little village is such a bookshop!
Ginnie: You would have been in heaven there, Philine. I was just asking Astrid about such a village here in the Netherlands and she's not sure. So please let us know!

I could look around there for hours.
Nice shot Ginnie.

Chris is so right, it was worth the whole trip. Everything fitted that day. This fabulous picture will be a great memory to that day.
Love the colours.
Ginnie: The day was packed to the gills, for sure, all to put our feet inside another country! It worked and it all was wonderful, thanks to Chris!

Good photo image when all books are on Ipads and alike devices
Ginnie: You raise an interesting point, Vintage: will this bookstore even exist a few years from now?
Old L Ron the man who gave the world Scientology.

I'm pleased you got to see Hay on Wye but it is in Herefordshire not Wales grin
Ginnie: HA! So I just Googled and this is what I found, Sir Phillips:

"Hay-on-Wye lies on the Welsh side of the Welsh/English Border in the County of POWYS, Wales. Although as far as the Royal Mail is concerned, it is better, apparently, to use the County of HEREFORDSHIRE, not to be confused with the county of HERTFORDSHIRE; a very popular mistake ! You will notice, after browsing our Hay site, that the majority of the postal addresses are either 'via Hereford' or 'Herefordshire'. It is purely for postal reasons!"

if they are L Ron Hubbard books they wouldn't sink the ship, they would just make the ship wonder who let the silly people on board smile
Ginnie: HAHAHA! Good one, Elaine. smile
Well you have been somewhere that I have not Ginnie, the book shop. This place looks fun.
Ginnie: Have Chris take you there one day, Chad....but it was a long trip back-n-forth. Totally worth it for us!

I LOVE old bookstores!! And - you've rendered this image absolutely timeless. I can smell the old paper..can't you??
Ginnie: You would have really liked it, Marcie. It amazed us that it didn't smell musty at all. They obviously keep it aired out...even if a bit unorganized. HA!
My family would be delighted I contact these guys to unload a truck full of covers. They also had the idea of opening a store ourselves but I discouraged them since I would have kept buying! This great image represents one of my favorite landscapes Ginnie.
Ginnie: How fun, Juan Carlos, to think of this as a landscape. I love it!
A fabulous capture Ginnie! I love the atmosphere.
Ginnie: Merci, Richard. Any book lover's dream place!

Now I was going to argue that Hay was actually in England but I'd be wrong; I see that the boundary is on the eastern edge of the town. It is a very popular place and a real booklover's delight. As usual, your processing in this case has given it an aged feel.
Ginnie: I had no idea there would be a discussion about exactly where this place is, Alana, or which country, so once again I have learned something here on SC. smile I love it. Thanks.
Looks like my bedroom! I would LOVE a trip here.
Ginnie: HA! How cool would that be, Mary!
Great shot. More books I don't need, but in places like this I will always find books that I just can't like for a minute longer.
Ginnie: Thanks, Sheila, and I know exactly what you mean. smile

It is the "nationale boekenstad" Bredevoort, nr. Bronkhorst and the IJssel -worth a visit indeed!

Ginnie: Aha! I will definitely let Astrid know. Bedankt, Philine!

A lovely capture Ginnie. I love books and one can simply get lost in all these wonderful books !
Ginnie: Thanks, Laurette. You'd have a heyday here!
I love old book stores, more like antiquarians
Ginnie: Exactly, Chantal.

Love the warm tones. There is a feeling of nostalgia and comfort here. You just know there would be no pretentiousness in this shop - what you see is what you get.
Ginnie: Thanks, Ingrid, and that's a good way of putting it!
Browsing heaven Ginnie. Lovely country round there isn't it. When we stayed in Herefordshire we went through here and on to Brecon in Wales
Ginnie: I'd go back in a New York minute, Janet. I'd love to see more of Wales! Thanks.
I've got the smell of old books up my nose! grin Great shot Ginnie
Ginnie: And surprisingly, Martin, it didn't have a musty smell. I think they kept the windows open! Thanks.
A fine study of a studious subject Ginnie!
Ginnie: Well put, Fred! Thank you kindly.
Hay is quite a place isn't it, especially for book lovers like me. I have been in this shop myself, where does one start, and of course one will never finish!
Ginnie: If I went back, Brian, I would actually try to find something! smile Thank you.
Need to remember to put the Strand Bookstore on you list for when you gals visit me in NYC! I just love old used books...just wondering about all the times their pages were touched...Wonderful capture!
Ginnie: The list keeps growing, Robin, doesn't it! smile Thank you.

Oh Ginny! Beautiful texture applied to this photograph... but the composition is what makes it. What a treasure. I will be swinging by your blog soon... ANOTHER birthday today (what where John and I thinking- 4 summer birthdays)... 15 girls(8-13) in our house today. And then I'm off to Washington DC for a long weekend... my first time ever! smile Hope you are enjoying your summer.

BTW - how many books did you buy in this lovely second hand bookshop?
Ginnie: You definitely have a life that keeps you hopping, Margaret! And yet you still have time for all your hobbies, blogs, horses, and children. I've never seen someone busier than you, doing so much! Enjoy Washington, D.C. My g'son was just there and was telling me on Skype everything he saw with his g'pa!

Believe it or not, we didn't buy one book between us! That's almost a sin!

Very vintage along with some of the books by the looks of them. It is a long time since I have been to Hay on Wye. I remember spending all day in the bookshops smile

Definitely just across the border in Wales ;-)
Ginnie: If we ever go back, Cherry, I'd love to spend more time actually LOOKING at the books! I'll never forget the place...and the journey we drove to get there! Thanks.
Guess what?!

I came across the biggest second-hand bookshop in England in Rochester last weekend.

Ha... You beat me again, G! wink
Ginnie: You'd love this one, LC. If you like BIG, you'd be in heaven. Nothing like a bookstore in a castle...unless it's in a church, like in Maastricht.
I just read about a literary festival there - it seems to be quite a "bookish" place, and you've captured the essence of bookishness beautifully!
Ginnie: Oh yes, Linda. A book lover's haven, for sure. In this day and age of e-book gadgets, it's actually a delight to see. Thank you.

Ginnie: Thank you kindly, Roland.
An evocative composition, Ginnie. (Glad to see you feature one of my old Dad's books!!)
Ginnie: Thanks, Graeme. And are you serious about your "old Dad's books?" I just noticed the same last name. WOW!
the multitude of books stacked and your signature treatment lend an old world charming feel
Ginnie: Thank you kindly, Ayush.

You can smell the old musty smell from here Ginnie great find and capture, but dose the name on the steps have any meaning.
Ginnie: Good question about the name Slingsby on the stool, Peter. I did a quick Google and it appears to be a site for office equipment: http://www.slingsby.com/
Oh, this is a dangerous place! I could spend days getting lost here, getting all geeked-out over old books. What a dream spot for me Ginnie :^) Great shot, so perfect in pitch and perspective.
Ginnie: Thank you, Doug. It sounds like many of us could get lost in that place! smile
Wouldn't it be fantastic, Ginnie, if, when we look at a scene as welcoming & charming as the one you've captured here, we could just step right into it and spend as much time as we wanted there?
Ginnie: That would be the ultimate virtual reality, Beverly!!! smile Thanks.

Love old books. I only worry about bookstores and libraries in this new era of e-readers.
Ginnie: I know exactly what you mean, Rob. What will happen to all those books in the years to come???
il y a de quoi lire et c'est ce que je dois faire le temps que je me repose,eh oui c'est le conseil du médecin si je veux être mais patiente lors de mon rétablissement....
Ginnie: They used to say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Maybe it should now be a book a day! Merci, l'Angevine.
I see they have one of America's best crap authors in the foreground. Hubbard is better known as the inventor of Scientology...
Ginnie: Interesting, Larry. I learn something on SC almost every day! smile

Ginnie: Thank you, Oscar. Gracias.
I love books....or maybe I should say reading...it's more about that then the book itself....unless it's a photobook wink Great atmosphere in this shot
Ginnie: Let's hope the love of reading never dies out like a vanishing breed, Aksel! Thanks.
