Fortunate that it is not more like a swastika, then, Ginnie...although, there is some resemblance.
Ginnie Hart: I never once thought of a swastika the entire trip, Ray, and will try to wipe that thought from my mind. Absolutely no resemblance at all...and I'm afraid the Maltese, who are proud of their knights, would be greatly offended.
A wonderful presentation of this icon Ginnie!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, kind sir.

Fabulous picture and I love the sun/shadow. The Maltese Cross is an icon indeed and they are proud of it.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, MLMA. I'm so glad we finally learned about it!

I guess this might feature somewhere in quite a few of your pictures, Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Oh, yes, Lisl. The Maltese cross really IS everywhere! It's hard to believe I never really knew anything about it before this trip.

Très belle composition lumineuse Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Marie. It seemed appropriate to use this as one to showcase the Maltese cross. And there are so many more to come!

And here it is in wrought iron as a guard rail
Ginnie Hart: Exactly! I have never seen a cross be so integrated in every part of life like this, Chris.

JP
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, JP.
Superb picture Ginnie. Reminds me of the old schoolboy joke, How do ou make a Maltese cross? Stamp on his toes.
Ginnie Hart: LOL, Chad. I haven't heard that one, of course. But then you Brits have had a long history with the Maltese Islands! smile
How do you make a Maltese Cross?

Stamp on his foot

(very old schoolboy joke)
Ginnie Hart: You and Chad are on the same page, Bill, so I obviously have to believe you. HA! As I told him, you Brits have had a long history with the Maltese Islands.
Just noticed Chad has told the same joke!
Ginnie Hart: Yup. Exactly. That means I know it's true!!! grin

I like this balustrade with the Maltese Cross vrmuch. "The eight points also symbolize the eight obligations or aspirations of the knights:

to live in truth
to have faith
to repent one's sins
to give proof of humility
to love justice
to be merciful
to be sincere and wholehearted
to endure persecution"
Ginnie Hart: Oh, WOW, Philine. I love this information about the knights. THANK YOU!!!
That is a superb shot Ginnie!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, Roland.

Further to my above comment...I believe I may be confusing it with the Iron Cross, which was very much associated with the swastika, Ginnie.

On investigating a little, It seems the Iron Cross and the Maltese Cross have shared "genes".
Ginnie Hart: Very interesting, Ray. I'll have to look into this further.
I had never thought of the origin of the maltese cross till now.
Ginnie Hart: Me neither, Mary. I'm getting a big education!

Seen any Maltese poodles?

I like how the cross stands out against the dark part of the door at the back. Great light variation.
Ginnie Hart: Poodles??? Someone on FB even asked if we had seen the Maltese falcon! Man alive. I keep getting my education. Thanks, Louis, for your kind comment.
to me, "falcon" comes rrright after Maltese, Ginnie grin some nice grill work there and i like it how they stretched the patterns on the steps.
Ginnie Hart: Someone else asked me if we had seen the Maltese falcon, Ayush, which I didn't even know about...so you're one step ahead of me. smile

They are rightly proud of such an award.
Ginnie Hart: Yes, they are, Alan!
It does have a similarity to the iron Cross Ray mentioned, but as far as the Maltese are concerned they have a very proud history as far as the German nation is concerned.
Ginnie Hart: I'll have to check out the iron cross, Brian, to compare it, but for now I'm still learning about this Maltese cross. It really was everywhere!
Do you have St John Ambulance in the States? It's the same cross!
Ginnie Hart: I am learning something new every day, LC. WOW. I had no idea.

Lovely image in wonderful sun.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, Beth.
That is a nice shot of that wonderful ironwork. A beautiful Maltese Cross.

Excellent!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Michael. I'm learning as much as I can about it...almost every day something new!
It's very well known in the UK, Ginnie, as the emblem of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John_Ambulance
Ginnie Hart: I was just told about that by London Caller above, Tom, and find it most fascinating. I'm learning as I go. smile
I love the design!
Ginnie Hart: I do, too, Robin. Each of the eight points means something, I just found out:

"The eight points also symbolize the eight obligations or aspirations of the knights:

to live in truth
to have faith
to repent one's sins
to give proof of humility
to love justice
to be merciful
to be sincere and wholehearted
to endure persecution"
very good game of light in this excellent picture!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, kind sir.

I've often wanted to visit Malta...thanks for these pics of your adventure!!
Ginnie Hart: You would LOVE Malta, Bonnie. I'm calling it Europe's best-kept secret after having seen it first hand. If you want to see more, please look at my last several posts on my other blog. Many more posts to come: http://ginniehart.blogspot.nl/
