Boat Bike Friday

While Astrid and I walked around Malta, we often found storage buildings where boats were being restored.

Lucky for us, when we peeked in, we were always invited in to check things out.

(the day we went to The Three Cities, across the harbor from Valletta)

They are fine-looking craft, Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: Astrid and the man who was working inside had quite a conversation about the regatta races 8 Malta teams have every year. I was the lucky one walking around to take the pics.
I love that stone wall. A wonderful background.
Ginnie Hart: Malta is mainly built with all the limestone it has everywhere, Michael. I found it to be wonderful, too.
Cool!
Ginnie Hart: I can still feel the huge warehouse-type room where these boats were, Robin, and the fun time Astrid had talking with the man who was there. It really WAS cool. smile

This is the place where I did not take one single picture. I talked to the man all the time. He explained the difference between these 'regatta boats'. There are boats for single competitor and multi compositors. Quite interesting.
Fabulous picture.
And it is serious business, there are 8 teams from the region. I found this YouTube....

Ginnie Hart: I actually found it delightful that you spent all your time talking to the guy...while I took the pics. You learned so much from that conversation, as did I later. He was so thrilled to talk to someone as knowledgeable as YOU!

Ginnie Hart: OMG. What a fabulous YouTube, MLMA. Who knew that 2 of the 4 guys (or one of the two) stood while rowing?! I can just imagine watching such a race...which could be one reason for going back? smile
I like the lines in this shot - and that the boat on the left is just beginning it's face lift!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Elizabeth. There was so much to see in this warehouse of regatta boats. So much but so little time!

Très jolie couleur verte.
Ginnie Hart: I thought so, too, Martine. They are very nice regatta boats for their upcoming races later in the year.
They are very nice looking boats Ginnie!
Ginnie Hart: We found out while there that they are regatta boats being prepared for their 8-team races in a few months.

That's kind of them. Are the boats painted in traditional colours? I love the stonework for the walls.
Ginnie Hart: All the boats in this storehouse were the same color and design, Alan, so these could be for one of the 8 teams on the island...I don't know. Maybe Astrid knows, since she was the one who talked to the guy. It would be fun to see such a race (from the YouTube line she added above).
I suppose boats are a very important aspect of life on a small island Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: Oh, yes, Alan. More important than bikes, from what we saw! grin

a nice scene with signs of working - I read Astrid's and your comments - I like to speak to the local people, too, if possible.
Ginnie Hart: Astrid was so concentrated on her conversation with the one man there that she never took a single pic, Philine. So I did it for her. Totally worth the time.

I can just imagine you and Astrid "peeking in" and getting an invite.
Ginnie Hart: It happened several times, Lisl, to our great delight. We found the Maltese people to be very friendly.
Hello,
Best colors boats, very nice photo Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, Roland.
Some winter work has not been completed, just a brush stroke.
Ginnie Hart: ...or two! smile Thanks, Mary.
jolis bateaux!! amitiés
Ginnie Hart: Getting ready for the regatta race, JP. Thanks.
I like those greens...
Ginnie Hart: I do, too, Larry!

The boats look modern against that wall.
Ginnie Hart: Indeed so, Louis!
A friend of mine in my camera club had family in Malta and I have seen his pictures of these sort of boats and their very colourful paint schemes.
Ginnie Hart: It's part of Malta's charm, Brian!

Is it warm enough for you guys to go out on the water yet? Gotta seem some pix of that smile
Ginnie Hart: It was definitely warm enough in Malta that week, Emily, and Astrid actually did take a quick swim in the Mediterranean water (but, sadly, I wasn't there to capture it). I did get others in the water, however. I'll have to find a good pic to post one day. smile
There look very handsome boats Ginnie. I had a look at the links Lady P added. Must be a great sight to watch and didn't the videos give a great view of the city
Ginnie Hart: You would absolutely love this wee country, Bill. OMG.
T.
I'd like to solve the puzzle!
"Sports Expert" wink

Gosh, you're not going to believe this.
I watched a lot of "Wheel of Fortune" back home in Malaysia! It was so popular.

>I should have known there was a Portland in England (since there’s one in America…in Oregon)

Did you know that...
That one in Oregon was actually named after the "original" one in Maine?!
And that "original" was named after the "actual" one in England. He he...
Ginnie Hart: You're close, LC. It's Sports Experience...for the racing regatta. Good guess. And, yes, these names we hear all the time have their way of looping around to the place of origin!

Une belle couleur verte
JP
Ginnie Hart: A great color for boats, JP, right?!
i like the smooth finish of the paint job, Ginnie. i expect the one on the left is about to get a similar shade soon.
Ginnie Hart: What is it about the final paint jobs, Ayush...so fresh and pristine, ready for whatever the world throws its way!
good composition Ginnie... they maintain these boats very well....petersmile
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Peter. Gotta look good for the race, of course. smile
