What a cool sculpture.
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Hollie. I thought so, too.
He is stuck there forever.
Ginnie Hart: I'm afraid so, Michael...forever blowing smoke?!
He looks like he is totally surprised by something.
Ginnie Hart: Surprised or who knows what, Michael. I always wonder about these statues/gargoyles.
I'm sure! I think it's really a great composition, Lisl!
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Elizabeth.

Ginnie Hart: But why is he blowing smoke, Chris???

I will try to find out, Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Are you the only one who sees the smoke, Lisl???? Astrid has her own idea of what's happening....
Perhaps it is a vent pipe from the toilet Ginnie. I was there two evenings last week as two of our grandchildren were taking part in a performamce of a piece to celebrate 800 years since Magna Carta. Did you see the light sculpture?
Ginnie Hart: Are you kidding me, Chad. Two of your grandkiddies were in the Magna Cantata?? They were rehearsing that day in the North Transept and I even recorded them. If I remember, I'll send you an image or two to see if you can see them.

Gutteridge might know! A sort of gargoyle? I like those figures heads at the churches -this one with the curly hairs is a beautiful one!
Ginnie Hart: There were several of them, Philine, but later on the big screen I could actually see smoke coming from its mouth!

a vent pipe - yes, Chad is right!
Ginnie Hart: That would make sense!

I know well the cathedral of Salisbury and her magnificent convent. I photographed her in 2005 during a stay in United Kingdom. Beautiful sculpture Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: I like that we're on the same page today, Marie. These cathedrals really ARE magnificent, even down to the smallest details like this.

I was impressed by the variety of 'heads' all around the Cathedral. I think the smoke you see is the lead protection inside the mouth and going up the roof, to keep from the stone getting too wet..
It looks like smoke though.
I read Chad's comment, to know that we might have seen and heard 2 of his Grandchildren in the choir that day smile
Ginnie Hart: If anyone knows, it's you, MLMA. I really get my education, all the time, while out-n-about. It blows my mind. And yes, it amazes me that we might have seen Chad's grandkids there that day!
He doesn't look very happy with his lot Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: He was part of a choir of fellas, Bill, and was probably the best of the lot. smile

Perhaps it is something like the smoke coming from the chimney of the Vatican when a new Pope is elected (or not!) Not keen on Chad's suggestion, though smile
Ginnie Hart: I like you idea much better, Alan, and think it's a rather good one! smile

Agree with Astrid that it's the lead pipe in his mouth catching the light to look like smoke. He's a great capture, Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: You and Astrid know these things, of course, Pauline. Thanks.

Close up like that he looks rather scary!!
Ginnie Hart: And to think he can never change his expression, Cherry!
Ha ha... Do they still charge you £6 entrance fee? This is so bad, religion is not all about money. wink The government should look after this historical building.
Ginnie Hart: Yes, they do still charge you to enter the cathedral, LC...a "suggested voluntary donation" of £7.50. (sigh)
It does look like smoke and the fellow looks like he is suffering A little taste of Hell perhaps.
Ginnie Hart: You may have nailed it, Mary!
He is not looking very happy about it Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: And furthermore, Janet, I think he'll look that way forever. sad

There are many gutter spouts outside the Salisbury cathedral:

Ginnie Hart: AHA! That's what they're called, Philine. That really helps. THANK YOU.
Good job it wasn't raining Ginnie if you were standing under this outlet. BTW I enjoyed your Day 6 blog, what a pleasant surprise to have Alan turn up for the day.
Ginnie Hart: I've figured out today from comments, Brian, that this is a water spout! I love it. And yes, Alan was a great surprise for our day in Salisbury.

OMG, he could get a lockjaw!
Ginnie Hart: HA! For sure, Philine.
He was caught at the start of blowing a smoke ring I see. He has great curls too.
Ginnie Hart: I like that thought of a smoke ring, Jacquelyn. How fun. smile

I believe there is a gutter box behind the head and the mouth, with the lining acts as a spout on rainy days. A functional sculpture.
Ginnie Hart: Yes, indeed, Louis. I finally figured out that several of these chaps that day were water spouts. I could even start "collecting" them, if I had access to such cathedrals more frequently. smile
some tall person left a cig in there...
Ginnie Hart: Now that would be an idea, Larry! HA!
That smoke is so very cool!!!!
Ginnie Hart: I didn't see it till the big screen, Robin. A nice surprise. smile Thanks.
