The Dutch Version of Venice

...for Boat Friday!

Giethoorn is called the Venice of the Netherlands, seriously.

The only way non-residents can get through the city center is by boat, foot or bike.

It was my early birthday present from Astrid in mid-May.

Wonderful place.

Really like that you let the vibrant greens shine out, Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Ray. Springs greens simply can't be messed around with!
So beautiful - lush and delightful. One of the things I've noticed and liked about the Netherlands is that it seems to have a human scale. I'm sure there are big buildings and modern roads, but so much of it seems made for boat, foot or bike.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you kindly, Linda. "Human scale" is a good way to put it. Life clips along here like anywhere else but it does feel closer to the ground, if that makes sense!

This is a very relaxing image Ginnie. I take it that you are now an able sailor then smile
Ginnie Hart: Thanks. SAVO, but make that Astrid who is the able sailor. She was like a little kid that day, helming a small motor boat for 4 hours. We were both in heaven. smile

This is a wonderful view from the boat. Love the POV.
smile We had a great day that day, just perfect weather and almost nobody around. Can you imagine, going back in winter and skate these canals??
Ginnie Hart: Hartstikke bedankt, MLMA. I'll never forget the place and how much fun you had helming the small motor boat. Skating there in the winter would be a blast...except for probably way too many people there all wanting to do the same thing! But we could try?
Well my goodness that would be a fantastic place to spend a sunny day!!
Ginnie Hart: It was, Elizabeth!!! I highly recommend it. smile Thank you.
What a great place for a relaxing paddle.
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Michael. Yes, it was!
It is a beautiful shot of the canal and the bridges with all that colour Ginnie... and did Astrid buy you that nice red kayak for your birthday lol....petersmile
Ginnie Hart: HA! Astrid bought me 4 hours of lazy boating on these canals winding through the city, Peter. We both were in heaven! Thanks.

You live & learn - must be a fascinating place Ginnie
Ginnie Hart: Not as big as the other Venice, Chris, but definitely well worth the visit. Thanks.

Oh, yes, Giethoorn, I remember well, and we went by a bigger ship through the canals - a picturesque, but also very touristy village - a wonderful, green-fresh photo!
Ginnie Hart: It was delightful to be there before the tourist season began, Philine. It was almost like we were one of the residents! It's a delightful place, indeed. Bedankt.
Beautiful capture, great composition, amazing light and colors! Great place, excellent work.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, kind sir. It really is a great place.

How sensible to keep the cars out, Ginnie. A very peaceful "Boat Friday"
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Lisl. I think they take pride in keeping the city "clean" like this. Besides, the tourist attraction is probably what keeps them afloat!
This looks a delightful place Ginnie.
Ginnie Hart: It is indeed, Bill!
Hey, we do have a Little Venice in London.
But it doesn't really look like Venice at all. Ha!
London version is too industrialised, with too many flyovers built above the canals.
Ginnie Hart: I have a feeling many countries have their own Little Venice, LC. I think America's is in Las Vegas?! smile Thanks.
I was here years ago Ginnie. A wonderful version of Venice indeed, and most likely its 'only' version in a few years!
Ginnie Hart: It's fun, Juan Carlos, isn't it. Gracias.
what a lovely harmony between all those greens! waters still fascinate me
Ginnie Hart: You'd love this charming little town, Marie! Merci.

Anywhere with water is likened to Venice Ginnie. This looks a lovely place to relax or paddle.
Ginnie Hart: I 'spect so, Chad. You'd love it here!

We share the same month for our birthdays Ginnie and what a finer way to get about, would love it.
Ginnie Hart: To be honest, Peter, my birthday is in June but we celebrated it early, in May. smile However, I'm a Gemini and it's possible we do share that!?! Thanks.
We think alike. I gave a friend an afternoon's boat trip when we were in Mexico on his birthday.
Ginnie Hart: Indeed, Mary! It was one of my most memorable birthdays! smile

Looks better than Venice.. less Italians smile Greener, too. Our Birmingham has more canals than Venice does. I'd like to spend some time sat on that bench.
Ginnie Hart: You'd have a heyday here, Alan, especially before/after the tourist season. I can just see you sitting on that bench. smile
sounds very civilised to mesmile and plenty of bridges to choose from by the look of things.
Ginnie Hart: Lots of bridges everywhere, John. You'd love the place. Thanks.

Looks so peaceful and serene...
Ginnie Hart: It is, Sue, as long as you're there BEFORE or AFTER the tourist season (which is now).
Fantastic climatic photograph, beautiful colours. I am greeting
Ginnie Hart: You're a sweetheart, Zielona. Thank you. Dziękujemy.
Lush and very green. Nice.
Ginnie Hart: I love that time of the year, Jacquelyn. Thanks.
Picture perfect!I love everthing about this picture! I would kayak on there also. wink
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Sue, and yes, so would I. It seemed to be a pasttime after school for the kids.
A fine shot Ginnie, each bridge framed within the other. Is this the place some of us saw on a video somewhere a while ago, I remember you said you would like to go there
Ginnie Hart: Yes, Brian, I think so. It's a fabulous place to visit and easy to do in one day! smile Thanks.

There is a town in Northern Holland that is referred to as Klein Giethoorn, where you will see the same views. The town is Opperdoes and they have a camping named Klein Giethoorn.

Great shot, reminds me a lot.
Ginnie Hart: Oh my, Louis. The things we find out from you! Astrid says she didn't know this either. It's a small world after all! Hartstikke bedankt.
A charming place Ginnie!
Ginnie Hart: It really is, Richard. Merci.

It looks like the perfect place to be. I love how green it is smile
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Cherry. Springtime is THE time, isn't it. All the greens are so bright and alive.
The Bridge of... er... Rude Carpentry?
Ginnie Hart: But it does the trick, Tom, right?! smile Thanks.
Nice fresh greens. Good for you!
Ginnie Hart: Nothing says it better than early spring, Graeme! Thanks.

Looks like a great place to sit and reflect.
Ginnie Hart: It was a wonderfully lazy day, Jennie. We had the boat for 4 hours! smile
c'est agréable ces canaux où les ponts sont en bois,un style petite venise
Ginnie Hart: Now you know why it's called the Venice of the North! smile Merci, l'Angevine.
and a very charming spot you have shared with us, specially on a gloomy Singapore saturday
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Ayush. We were delighted to pick a day that was mostly sunny and without rain!

Ginnie Hart: Ahhhh. St. Petersburg. I've been there, too, Noel, but forgot it was also called the Venice of the North. I bet there are little Venices all over the world! You'd love this one. smile Merci.

It looks lovely with the fresh green growth and many reflections.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, George. It's a delightful place before the heavy tourist season begins!
Delightful image, Ginnie, so peaceful & serene. The absence of automobile noise & exhaust fumes must be a treat for the senses.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Beverly. Even with the electric boat motors, it's still very quiet...especially during off-season.
