photoblog image When in Rome

When in Rome

...you do what the Dutch do!

This English narrowboat swam over to us here in the Netherlands from the Big Island.

I love that it fits right in, even though it is definitely not a Dutch boat.

Linge Harbor in Gorinchem, Netherlands, where we live.

I'm early for Boat Friday because Astrid and I will be celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary this weekend.

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!

I'll bet that narrowboat does right well in skinny water!

What fun it would be to travel like that, and how well you've captured the brilliant light of water-life!
Ginnie Hart: I love that term, Linda...skinny water. smile Yes, this narrowboat would beat our Dutch boats hands down. Thanks for your comment. I'd love to see what the inside looks like on this one!

Beautiful and relaxing image. I just noticed - did you get a new layout ... new colour scheme? Love it.
Ginnie Hart: Thanks a million, Emily. But, NO, there's really nothing new here...nothing in a couple years or more, at any rate. Hmmm. I wonder what has left that impression? smile
Nice patterns and lines, shadows and reflections! You always post the warmest feeling images! HAPPY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!! Mwah!
Ginnie Hart: You're such a sweetheart, Elizabeth. THANK YOU.
I wish I could be there to do some shooting. You are so lucky. That is very cool.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Michael. Is it possible for you to make a trip over here one day??? We'd be more than happy to give you some shooting time! smile Seriously.

Absolute fabulous picture, great colours, never get tired of this view.
That boat is there already for a long time. To me it is amazing how they got it there.
It is a long way from the Gorinchem harbour to England...... and it can be a rough sea too. Not to talk about those English Pirates of course, still wondering the North sea smile
Ginnie Hart: Hartstikke bedankt, MLMA. I would love to know the story behind this narrowboat. I bet someone knows, so let's ask! smile

Oh, Ginnie, do enjoy your 2nd wedding anniversary! In Rome? I know the phrase 'do as the Romans do' from my parents, one of their very wise advices! But I don't know which boat is from the Big Island -there are so many ones- and in my view they all look Dutch or English or German or Hulululu (as we kids said?! A wonderful, atmospheric picture with all the lovely reflections in the gracht!
Ginnie Hart: HA! After being in England now several times, Philine, the narrowboats have become very distinctive to me. They really are narrow (our Dutch boats are much wider) and they have those distinctive brights colors and that big "knob" at the front. Most of the other boats here are what I would call yachts, except for two Dutch boats, like the one in the far back-left. smile

This thing sailed over the North Sea Ginnie!!

Have a nice anniversary
Ginnie Hart: If anyone would know, Chris, it would be you! smile Many thanks!
Is it really two years already! Have a wonderful weekend
Ginnie Hart: Time really does fly, Bill, doesn't it! Thank you. We're having so much fun. smile
Interesting approach to navigation Ginnie. The English narrowboat seems now very claustrophobic with those tiny windows.
Ginnie Hart: I'd want the windows to be a bit bigger, Juan Carlos, to let in as much light as possible. I bet the narrowness is like a submarine?!

It is amazing that the narrow boat made it across the North Sea; I wonder it was sailed across or was taken on a ship? I love the lighting in this; it has the feel of a bright winter's morning.

Happy Anniversary!
Ginnie Hart: I definitely would love to know how it got here, Alan. I'll see if we can find out! And thanks for the anniversary wishes. We are such happy campers. smile

I can spot the English narrowboat - our local Canal has many, even this time of year. Have a great week-end
Ginnie Hart: They stick out like sore thumbs here, Elisabeth. I love them! Thanks.
Nice view Ginnie, Gorichem is a friendly city
Ginnie Hart: Bedankt, Chantal. Gorinchem is a lovely city!
A lovely picture, nice reflection and nice boats. The long boat really does stand out though as "different". We caught Ginning.

Have a wonderful celebration weekend. Congratulations.
Ginnie Hart: Ahhh. I should have told more about this narrowboat, Sheila: it's R.W. Davis & Son, Ltd., Ship and Boat Builders, Marine Engineers, Morse No. 973. Now maybe we can all do some research! smile

Thanks for your weekend congrats!

This is a great winter's picture Ginnie smile Maybe the narrowboat, hitched a lift with a Cat - seems hard to believe it crossed the sea?
Congratulations on the anniversary!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Martin. The more I see this boat, the more curious I become. I hope we can find out the story. In the meantime, we'll enjoy celebrating our second anniversary. smile

You do indeed and isn't Venice known as the Amsterdam of the south?
Ginnie Hart: HA! I think you're right, Chad! smile Thanks.
The narrowboat certainly stands out from the others in this shot, Ginnie. Would be fun to talk to the owners to find out how they ended up moored at a Gorinchem wharf.

Best wishes to you and Astrid on your second wedding anniversary!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you dear, Beverly, for your anniversary wishes. And I'm gonna see if we can find out about that narrowboat. We know someone here who might just know! smile
A splendid composition featuring this cheeky little
English invader. I do so love the Dutch architecture.
Ginnie Hart: Thanks, Martin. It's nice to be reminded of our English friends! smile

love that black coloured boat, the harbour looks beautiful with those wonderful houses....this country looks so beautiful. Great shot
Ginnie Hart: That black boat is the narrowboat from England, Krunal, sitting in our Dutch harbor. It's a small world after all. smile
Very nicely capture with this light Ginnie.
Happy Anniversary to both of you.
Have a great weendend!
Ginnie Hart: Thank you and thank you, Richard. Merci.
Now I know why your here on Thursday, have a great weekend you two. Now to the picture, what lovely harbour you have in Gorinchem, and to see an English narrowboat there is great, I bet it was a n interesting trip across the North Sea, assuming it got there under its own steam.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, Brian. We're planning to have a great weekend, leaving first thing this Friday morning. We're also expecting snow. smile

We plan to ask the harbor master about that narrowboat. We're eager to hear the story.

An archetypal scene of Dutch delight.
Ginnie Hart: Thank you, George. As Astrid would say, more Dutch you cannot get...even with a narrowboat in the picture. smile

It does look at home and yet at the same time quite obviously is quite apart. It might be on a version of what we call a busman's holiday!
Ginnie Hart: We're gonna ask the harbor master about it, Ingrid. In the meantime, it's fun to make up a story. smile
A great crisp winter image -Happy anniversary!

Oh..I forgot about your anniversary. Happy..happy - to both of you. And - I love the canal!!! Shoreacres 'skinny water' comment made me smile!
Ginnie Hart: After 3 hours of blowing glass (Astrid) and taking pictures of her (me), we're taking a rest at our B&B before our anniversary dinner, Marcie. We watched fresh snow fall, so you could definitely say we are in heaven...on this our second anniversary. smile Thank you.
Think they look better on the canals Ginnie but superb capture anyway.
Ginnie Hart: Actually, Peter, this is also a canal but just before it goes through the locks to the Merwede river. But I know what you mean. Exactly! Thanks.
