The Three

The Three Musketeers/Stooges/Whatever!

Somewhere near the Grand Place (Grote Markt) in Brussels, Belgium, is this small sculpture/fountain.
It is my absolute favorite of them all but I don't know its name or who sculpted it?

(as seen last July, 2008)

  • Hey Ginnie, your composition, DOF, sharpness, tones are exemplary! After seeing your depiction of this sculpture, I don't even care about who sculpted it anymore... I just care that Ginnie shot it
Ginnie: You are such a sweetheart, Abisola. You sure know how to make my day! Thank you.

  • Very pretty statue and an exceptional capture.
Ginnie: I love that it's so small, Sherri. Now I wish I had something to give it scale. Thanks.

  • Maybe they are the Three Meteorologists!
Ginnie: That's what Philine suggested, Larry, several comments down. If ever I'm back, I'll check to see if there is a plaque/marker of some sort.

  • Well they're absolutely charming Ginnie - so they can't be the Stooges!
Ginnie: As Astrid mentions a couple comments later, you're too hard on yourself, Chris!!!

  • Gem of a statue...perfect image of it, Ginnie.

[I think they are the team assigned to forecaste the weather...here they are seen checking humidity.]
Ginnie: You can see why it's my favorite, Ray. There's so much character in it! Thanks. Both Larry and Philine agree with you...the Three Meterologists.

  • Perfecte foto MLS, the play of sun/shadow is wonderful, I remembered walking around it.
'Three' is an important number in SC and I think Chris is too hard on himself .
I am going to like the series, it brings back great memories, dank je wel, KSK.
Ginnie: I just wish I had paid attention to if there was a plaque/marker telling what it is, MLMAMV! I agree that Chris was being too hard on himself, and I told him so. And yes, this brings back memories for me as well!

  • Oh, I wonder that the three guys are still standing there in Brussels, for they look so enthousiastically moved, excited and living that they must have long since left this post/position- they remind me a bit of the Three Holy Kings/Magicians/Meteorologists, indeed while looking at the comet- or looking if it is raining? In any case they are en route! Your pic is wonderful -in composition, lighting, and colour!
Ginnie: I love how your mind works, Philine. Give you an image and I think you could write a book about it!

Ginnie: You see what I see, Ingrid, and "moving" is exactly the right word. I especially like the stick/rod at least two of them (maybe all 3?) are holding together. Thank you.

  • I tried to google this statue, did not find anything though.
I suggest it is called: "Looks like rain"
Ginnie: Tut tut! It does look like rain...with Winnie the Pooh and gang on an expedition! I Googled as well and couldn't find a thing.

  • If there a shell/shells on the gown/s can be seen, the Three could be Jacob's- pilgrims, for Brussels was one of the most important stations on the pilgrimage ways to Santiago di Compostella in Medieval times... But I' m not sure!
Ginnie: If anyone fres this out, Philine, it will be YOU. I'm sure of it!

  • Known as "Postuurke van Den Blinde". The statue captures three blind people holding onto a stick and finding their way.

So it is not 3 stooges/musketeers/whatever. The number 3 invokes blind mice in my thoughts. Shutup brain - think of something else.

    Excellent picture.
Ginnie: I declare, Louis. Why didn't any of us see that that's what this is! Now the stick makes perfect sense. Thank you so much for enlightening us!

I have just Googled this and it appears to be based on Pieter Bruegel's painting "Parable of the Blind" from 1568:
    http://www.abcgallery.com/B/bruegel/bruegel137.html
I think the sculptor is Jos De Decker. You can see how small it is in this image:

  • I'm happy and excited -with you- that Louis and yourself found out the motif of this statue which now might receive a quite deeper meaning.
I looked at Brueghel's grandious painting and I have to say never blindness has been painted/depictured in this impressive-moving way, every blind man has another facial expression- geweldig!-as Astrid mightsay!
In the interpretation of my book referring to the painting I read that the worst 'thing' is an inner blindness if we are struck by lack of emotions, of compassion, of love, being unaware and unconscious of the real important things and issues in our life...
Ginnie: Oh yes, Philine! There is definitely a deeper meaning for me now, since in my early years, after I had polio (age 9), I was classified "legally" blind. I had a blind friend in high school who helped me learn about Braille. I even had my own paper stock and stylus/template for writing it. So this has much more meaning than I ever realized. Now I know why this is my favorite of all sculptures...maybe anywhere in the world now! You are so right...inner blindness is the worst of all! God help us all to see!
